Grímannsfell Day Hike, Iceland — Waterfall, Wild Trails and Literary Legacy

Helgufoss - Grímmannsfell: Waterfall and Legacy

A Day Hike to Grímannsfell

This is the day hike for people who want more than scenery. Grímannsfell takes you across wild, often unmarked terrain: boggy fields, steep ridges, and rugged ground that demands agility and rewards you with genuine solitude. At the top, panoramic views over Iceland’s countryside stretch in every direction. On the descent, the hidden Helgufoss waterfall, tucked away in a peaceful valley that most visitors to Iceland never find. And to finish, a visit to the former home of Halldór Laxness – Iceland’s only Nobel Prize-winning author – now a fascinating museum set in beautiful gardens. It’s a rare combination: a real physical challenge and a meaningful cultural experience, all in one day.

Stunning Views and Hidden Gems

Reaching the summit of Stórhóll, you’ll find one of the most underrated viewpoints in Iceland, vast, quiet, and entirely yours. Rolling Icelandic countryside stretches in every direction, almost entirely free of other people. The descent leads you down toward Helgufoss, a secluded waterfall that feels genuinely discovered rather than visited. It’s the perfect lunch stop: the sound of rushing water, thick wilderness all around, and the satisfying knowledge that you earned your way here on foot.

Immerse Yourself in Icelandic Culture

After the hike, the group visits the former home of Halldór Laxness, whose novels brought Iceland’s landscapes and people to the world stage and earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1955. The house is now a museum, and the garden where Laxness wrote and walked is quietly extraordinary… especially after a day spent in the nature that inspired him. Your guide shares the connections between the landscape you’ve just walked through and the world Laxness created on the page. It’s a rare way to end a hike.

What to Expect on the Day

Pickup from Reykjavik is available for groups of up to 8: select it at booking. Prefer to self-drive? The trailhead is around 30 minutes from the city center and we’ll send you directions the day before.

Your guide meets you at the trailhead and briefs the group on the terrain, and is honest about it: Grímannsfell involves wild, often unmarked trail. No neat paths, not many signposts. The opening section crosses lush fields that give way to soft boggy ground, the kind that requires careful footing and a genuine appetite for being in real wilderness.

The ascent steepens as you approach the ridge, pushing through rugged terrain to reach the summit of Stórhóll. The views from the top are wide and quiet. Lunch happens here, with the wind and the silence for company.

The descent leads down toward Helgufoss: a waterfall that feels like a secret kept just for your group. Time to rest, take photos, and let the day settle. The final stop is the Laxness museum, where the house and gardens offer a reflective close to an already full day. Back in Reykjavik by early evening. Total time including driving: around 7 hours.

Is This Hike Right for You?

Grímannsfell is rated moderate: 11 km with 450 m of elevation gain, but the wild, unmarked terrain makes it feel more demanding than the numbers suggest. You should be comfortable walking on uneven, boggy ground without a clear path to follow. A spirit of adventure helps more than prior hiking experience here.

It’s the most culturally layered of our guided day hikes in Iceland: ideal for curious travelers, literature lovers, history enthusiasts, and anyone who wants their outdoor experience to tell a real story. It works beautifully for couples and small friend groups, and is a particularly good choice for solo travelers who appreciate depth alongside the physical challenge.

Not recommended for young children or anyone who needs clearly marked, stable trails underfoot.
